Buying a new Air Conditioner in Colorado

The first thing to understand when buying a new air conditioner is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, the SEER rating. The SEER rating is a measurement of the amount of cooling a unit does compared to the energy consumed. Ultimately, the higher the SEER rating the more efficient the air conditioner.

Colorado has a great climate and most years, we only need about 3 months of cooling. Taking this into consideration, we recommend a SEER rating of about 13 to meet most household needs. You won’t get much more out of a 16-18 SEER rating just because of the lower amount of cooling time in Colorado.

The final thing to consider when getting a new air conditioner is to consider the space that will be cooled. In Colorado, we don’t include basements in the square footage of the house for cooling. That means you will not need as big of an air conditioner as some other parts of the country. If you would like to learn more about air conditioning service or replacement, Goodman has an excellent HVAC Learning Center on their website.

Buying a new Furnace in Colorado

Buying a new furnace in Colorado is also about energy efficiency and that is represented by the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, the AFUE. The AFUE is the ratio of annual heat output compared to the amount of fuel it consumes. A higher percent means more fuel is used in heating your home instead of being wasted. Saving you money.

Unlike air conditioners in Colorado, you will need to take the square footage of your entire home into consideration when purchasing a new furnace, including the basement. The basement needs to stay warm enough to prevent any frozen or burst water pipes during the winter. We can help you find the right size furnace for your home’s square footage.

A final note to consider when buying a new furnace: how long do you plan on staying in your home? Furnaces of 98% AFUE do exist, but they will take a much longer period of time to recoup the cost than a mid-efficiency furnace (80-90% AFUE). Unfortunately, other than the age of a furnace, furnaces are usually not a huge selling point when you put your home on the market. If you are planning on being in your home less than 5 years, we recommend a mid-efficiency furnace. In your “forever home”? A high-efficiency furnace, around 96% AFUE, would be the right fit for you.
